End of support for SBS 2003

Microsoft released a product called Small Business Server that combined many of its most popular technologies. This new package offered email, web sites, sharepoint, and many other technologies bundled into one server. Considered to be the most popular version, SBS 2003, This server package is now 10 years old and Microsoft has announced it will stop supporting this package in 2014. Many companies are still using SBS 2003, and the physical server is also still in use. Microsoft has abandoned the SBS package and the costs associated with keeping the same technologies and upgrading to their current version are prohibitively expensive for most small business that originally adopted this software. For companies that are currently looking for a package that is similar to Small Business Server, there are two options. First, you can purchase the full products (Windows Server 2012, Sharepoint 2013, SQL 2012, etc) at a SUBSTANTIAL cost.  There is another option…

Depending on your budget, you can also use Linux and open source software. While Linux has long been known to be very stable, the initial setup has left most companies out in the dark due to the complexity involved. One solution is Zentyal. It comes in three flavors: community(free), small business (paid), and enterprise (also paid). With the community edition you get almost everything but not much in the way of guaranteed support. The small business edition is similar to the community edition but you get a guaranteed response time of one business day and you also have the option of adding on a module that mimics Exchange server. The enterprise edition of the product upgrades the response time to 4 hours, and the Exchange server is built in. Between these three levels, every business can choose their budget and get up and running pretty quickly. The setup is quick and painless, the ongoing maintenance is simple enough that an onsite support person is never required, the status of the server can be seen via a web page, and the server offers some high end features that can REALLY reduce the IT budget for all companies. Contact us if you are interested in learning more about this package and see how it can reduce your budget without losing all the features that would make your business more competitive!
